Flea and Tick Preventatives

Flea

Parasites that live on the skin like fleas and ticks can cause a variety of health problems for your pet such as skin irritation/allergic reaction, secondary skin infections, and spread of diseases like Lyme disease in dogs and infectious anemia in cats. These bloodsucking parasites can be prevented by using topical or oral flea and tick preventatives. Ideally, preventatives should be used year-round.

Patton Veterinary Hospital carries several products for flea and tick control. For cats, we offer Feline Revolution a monthly spot on treatment which treats a variety of parasites including fleas, some species of ticks, roundworms, hookworms, ear mites and heartworms. We also have Feline Frontline which works well for ticks but has not been as effective for controlling fleas in recent years. For dogs we have an effective topical flea and tick preventative called Vectra 3D and we have a newer product called Bravecto. Bravecto is a chewable that is given once every 3 months to control fleas and ticks.
Do not wait until your pet has a flea or tick problem to treat him. These products work much better as preventatives than as cures once the pet is already infested. Ask a Patton Veterinary Hospital representative which product is right for your pet.
