Dog Allergies

Katie asked:
I think my dog has allergies, she is always itching to the point of bleeding a little, but she doesn't have flees. Is it safe to give her a little benedryl for that?

Allergies are common problems in pets. Typically the three main categories of allergies we consider: allergy to things in the environment called atopy, allergy to ingredients in the pet's diet such as chicken or beef, or allergy to flea bites. There are other causes to itching such as skin infections and skin parasites like mange. If your pet is itching to the point of bleeding it is important for them to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the cause of the itching prior to giving over the counter medications at home as this may worsen some conditions or mask clinical signs in others. Bathing with a gentle oatmeal shampoo with cool water may provide your pet with some relief while you wait for your pet's appointment. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
